3C Christensen Ranch
| The roots of 3C Christensen ranch have been based in the rolling hills of central South Dakota for nearly a century. Tracing back to the 1920’s, owner John Christensen’s father helped drive the family’s fat cattle twenty miles to the nearest railhead on horseback. From there, their steers were loaded and shipped to the Sioux City Stockyards. While their practices have advanced along with the times, the family has managed to keep the age old concepts of practicality and integrity the basis of their operation. By building a program based on a “no-nonsense” type of cow, the Christensen and Dunsmore families have built a solid reputation of producing dependable cattle and providing dependable service. “We pride ourselves in providing our customers with functional cattle and an honest demeanor, but also value any comments or suggestions our customers share with us,” John and his wife Peggy explain. From first incorporating Simmental genetics into the herd in 1971, to currently running close to 900 Simmental and SimAngus pairs John and Peggy Christensen marked their 40th annual production sale in 2011. Approximately 200 of those brood cows are owned by their oldest daughter, NaLani and her husband, Rick Dunsmore. Together, Rick and NaLani operate NLC Simmental Ranch and follow the same high integrity values as their predecessors. “To remain in our herd, a cow can’t cause any problems,” states NaLani. “Our females must have sound feet and legs and a well balanced udder. All of our mature cows calve out on pasture beginning the first part of April, so they’ve got to be able to take care of themselves.” “We expect our cows to thrive on little supplementation and wean a heavy calf without the assistance of creep feed,” John further explains. Both the 3C and the NLC herds are nationally recognized not just for their functionality, but eye appeal as well. Several well known bulls and genetics have come from the central South Dakota herd including 3C Full Figures, 3C Macho, MR NLC Superior, and most recently MR NLC Upgrade. Popular ABS bull Ellingson Legacy M229, better known as “Olie” is also owned by NLC Ranch and his influence can be found in many bulls and females from both programs. Besides offering 200+ powerful yearling bulls each year, they also market close to 50 feature open heifers on their annual production sale every March. These highly versatile females are purchased by a variety of customers- commercial cattlemen and purebred breeders alike can find value in the offering. Each fall, the family offers approximately 100 Simmental and SimAngus spring bred heifers for sale private treaty. They also offer an additional set of May-born bulls privately following their production sale each year. Despite the many challenges that arise while fostering a cattle operation, John can’t imagine his family in any other type of business. “The lifelong process of building our cowherd and developing quality genetics is our passion. Even better, the seed stock business allows us to share our passion with fellow cattlemen and friends; and that’s a true enjoyment.” 3C Christensen Ranch John & Peggy Christensen, Cam & Carly John’s Cell: (605) 350-1278 Cam’s Cell:(605) 350-2018 Fax: (605) 458-2231 Email: csmith@alliedgeneticresources.com NLC Simmental Ranch Rick & NaLani Dunsmore, NaLea, Chase & Swayzee Home: (605) 458-2425 Rick Cell: (605) 354-7523 NaLani Cell (605) 350-5216 Email:rnd@sbtc.net |
